Chats with the queen behind Australian brand, Mossman - Deanna Depetro

What were you doing pre Mossman & how did you get to the point of becoming Creative Director at Mossman? I was living in New York pre Mossman for a few years, it has always been a dream of mine to experience the fashion industry in NY. I was fortunate to be exposed to so many facets of the fashion world in such an iconic city and loved my job, but nothing beats home. I was originally employed as a designer at Mossman and did that role for a few years and then the opportunity to buy the business came up and I did so with my business partner who also worked for Mossman at the time. We had a great relationship and connected on all levels and just understood each other. But most importantly we shared the same goals, morals and values and the rest is history.

What has been a career highlight to date? There are so many, but one that stands out first is when Jennifer Hawkins wore our red jumpsuit at the Myer fashion runway a few years ago. It is always impossible to get Jen to wear your product so it was definitely a great feeling. When we met her after the show she said to me she loved the jumpsuit and the fit was amazing and that in itself says hard work pays off.

Who are you designing for and how do you come up with new inspo & ideas each collection? I love designing for all women, no matter the age or body shape. I want every woman to know they can purchase from Mossman as we cater to all. I get a lot of my inspo from travelling, and I love people watching down the street, looking at what they’re wearing. I also love going to the fabric market in China and touching and feeling fabrics, it gets me so excited and a lot of my creativity stems from that also.

Why did you decide to launch an Essentials range and what are your favourite pieces from the collection? I created the Essentials Range to have pieces that can be worn season after season. I love a power blazer than can be styled back with anything in your existing wardrobe. The pants and tops were orchestrated to style back with our fashion pieces for the woman who didn’t want to wear matching fashion sets. My favourite piece from the essentials range is definitely the blazers. I love a blazer, my wardrobe is full of blazers and you can never have too many in my opinion.

Who are your fashion muses? I love Christine Centenera, and Olivia Palermo. They are my all time faves.

Who are your faves to follow on Social Media and why? I love Bettina Looney she has really cool style of making such a plain dress look glamorous with her accessories or just a flat simple sandal. Jeanette Madsen is another favourite. I love the way she mixes glam and casual pieces together so you really get the most out of the styles in your wardrobe and are utilised to whole different level. Josefine H.J inspires me with her clean cut look of oversized blazers and denim jeans. She has more of a relaxed vibe but brings an element of glamour to her looks.

What are your handbag must-haves at the moment? Definitely a Chanel bag. It’s a classic and timeless piece, but I do have my eye on a Dior saddle bag.

Plans for Mossman for the future? We have so many exciting things in the works for Mossman but have been put on hold temporarily due COVID-19. It’s a small setback, but we will get there one way or the other. Our next main focus is expanding our brand globally, launching a bridesmaid collection seasonally and some exciting collaborations. So watch this space!
